There’s always a sense of satisfaction, reflecting on a job well done, and no more fitting a time than approaching the end of the year.

As an industry, we demonstrated exceptional resilience as we rose from the ashes of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s not been easy – companies and individuals respectively have found it difficult to return to a form of stability. Nonetheless, there is optimism in the air and a sense that this wonderful sector in which we work is made of strong stuff.

From an Unusual point of view, we are extremely thankful for the opportunities we have had this year, all of which have put us in a very fortunate position as we move ahead into the new year. We’ve been incredibly busy on the sports side of our business – proud to have provided rigging infrastructure for the Winter Games in Beijing, the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the World Cup in Qatar to name just a few. Our teams have worked tirelessly to achieve the brief and beyond, to an amazing standard, often spending long periods of time away from their families and working in places which are culturally very different but which also had very strict COVID protocols which added to the complexities of the projects. We are incredibly grateful to each and every one of them.

Closer to home, we are delighted to see a strong recovery within the world of theatre. Business is booming, tours are back on the road, the West End alive with new shows, whilst concurrently, we’ve been delighted to work on multiple theatre refurbishments. And of course, we couldn’t write this piece without mentioning the spectacle of pantomime season. We’ve been rigging productions across the country – about 15 altogether – including the star-studded Panto at the Palladium.

Events like Sanctuary (the COVID memorial), the Christmas Lights on Piccadilly and Regent St in London, the new Battersea Power Station Christmas decorations and various events and exhibitions across the country have all been a pleasure to manage.

On a more sombre note, it’s been a year of losses too – personal losses, some wonderful industry people and of course Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth. AJ had a lot of respect for the Royal Family and so we were pleased to play a small part in the state funeral back in September. We know he would have been proud of our contribution.

And so we look ahead to the New Year, new starts, and new challenges. The Unusual job board is looking busy and we will take this brief Christmas holiday to recharge our batteries and prepare for everything that 2023 has to offer.

We would like to wish our clients, colleagues, friends and families who celebrate, a wonderful Christmas; and we look forward to catching up with you all in some way, shape or form in the New Year!
